50 Shades Of Grey About 50 Shades of Grey

About 50 Shades of Grey

The book was originally self published as an ebook by its author E.L. James in 2011 and printed versions were only available after the publishers, Vintage Books acquired the rights in March 2012.

The book became amazingly popular very quickly, and it has now set the record for being the fastest selling paperback of all time with over 100 million copies sold and topping best seller lists worldwide.

Two follow up books have also now been published, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Free.

BDSM has finally come into the spotlight, and far from being seen as a kinky fetish, it's now gained notorious respectability amongst millions of 'vanillas' who want to experiment sexually. All this has happened after the book 50 Shades Of Grey introduced Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele to the World.

There's mixed feeling amongst the BDSM community as to whether this is a good or bad thing but the least it's done is to educate people that BDSM is more than just getting the whips and chains out on a Friday night, and if it releases people's inhibitions that can't be a bad thing. The purpose of this article isn't to debate the rights or wrongs, or to be critical of the plotline - it's simply to keep you updated on the book and upcoming film adaptation.

The Plot : Anastasia Steele (also know as Ana) is a 21 year old student who takes the place of her friend Kate Kavanagh to interview a guy named Christian Grey, a 27 year old wealthy and successful entrepreneur. (Kate writes for the student newspaper and is ill with flu at the time). Our leading lady, Miss Steele fancies Mr. Grey, though finds him a little intimidating at first. The interview doesn't go that well for her but it doesn't really matter too much, she thinks, as she assumes their paths won't cross again anyway.

She works at a hardware store part time and who turns up there one day to buy some rope, masking tape, cable ties etc ... you guessed it, Christian Grey. Ana tells him that some photos are needed for the upcoming article about him and a photo shoot is arranged with Jose, the photographer (who fancies Anastasia himself)

The following day, and after the shoot at the hotel Christian Grey staying at, they have a little chat over coffee and Christian asks Anastasia if she's dating Jose. She tells him she’s single, and a few cups of java later and they're getting on like a house on fire. They're both single it seems, and she's intrigued by his interest as she thinks she might not be his type and that she isn’t attractive enough.

Our dashing Mr. Grey sends her an expensive first edition of the book 'Tess of the D'urbervilles' as a gift and after a drunken night out with her mates she gives him a ring. He tells her he's going to come and pick her up because she's had a few too many, which he duly does, just as Jose tries to make a move on her. She wakes up in his hotel bedroom, and he gives her a little telling off for getting in such a state and then says he'd like to have a bit of rumpy pumpy with her, though it might involve a bit of paperwork first.

He knows how to impress the ladies for sure, and off they go on a date, in his helicopter no less. In his apartment he wants her to sign a non-disclosure agreement making sure she doesn't tell anyone about what they get up to together. She agrees at first and he reveals his BDSM dungeon (not really a dungeon in the strictest sense, there's no filthy unplastered walls and rats running around). More like his BDSM playroom with all his favourite fetish toys and stuff. Now he says he wants her to sign a sexual dominance and submission contract. His rules are that Ana can't even look at him, let alone touch him so she's a little hesitant. They have sex anyway and he takes her virginity. Christian' mother turns up the following morning, just after they've had another bonking session. His mother is particularly surprised to find him with a woman as she’d always thought he may be homosexual due to the lack of women he’s been seen with. Little did she know he’d been up to all sorts when she wasn’t around

More packages from Christian arrive for Anastasia over the next few days. Strangely she doesn't have her own computer so he send her a laptop so they can communicate by email and she can also do some research into the BDSM lifestyle in preparation of her signing the contract. She's after more than just a sub/dom relationship, and wants a bit of romance so doesn't enter into this unwritten arrangement it with as much enthusiasm as him. She lessens contact and they lose touch until after her graduation from college, where lo and behold he turns up there as a guest speaker which re ignites her feeling for him . After much deliberation she decides she will sign the sub dom agreement.

At their next meeting they start to agree terms and conditions and it’s at this point Christian gets to give her a good spanking. She still hasn't signed the contract yet and he continues to give her extravagant gifts and takes her to meet his family. She also secures a full time job with a publishing company (that laptop came in handy after all). They continue the arrangement even though she hasn't physically signed a contract and she isn't quite sure if this lifestyle is for her until she knows exactly what it will entail. Finally, and after a lot of soul searching, Ana asks Christian to punish her which he duly does with a belt. Though she wants to be with him, it's to love him and be loved by him that she craves. Realising this lifestyle isn't what she wants they part ways before we meet up with them again in Book 2 - Fifty Shades Darker and Book 3 - Fifty Shades Free.

A full blown movie was released on February 13th 2015 starring Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.

Why is it called '50 Shades Of Grey'

The male characters name is Christian Grey, and grey is a colour too. Grey is a colour somewhere between black and white. He doesn't see himself as black or white (not in race but in perception). He says in the book he doesn't want a "normal hearts and flowers" relationship and refers to himself as being "50 shades of fucked up". Hence a good tile for the book is 50 Shades of Grey. Kinda makes sense now doesn’t it.
